Titles and descriptions: the 20-minute SEO fix

A quick audit of page titles and meta descriptions is the fastest SEO win most small sites can get. Here is how to do it in 20 minutes.

Another Wednesday, another SEO job, and this one you can finish before lunch. Page titles and meta descriptions are the highest-return twenty minutes in small-site SEO, and they are neglected on almost every site we look at.

Unlike speed work, where the returns taper off fast, title fixes pay immediately: they change what people see in the search results today.

What the title tag actually does

The title tag does two jobs. It tells Google what the page is about, and it is the blue link a searcher decides whether to click. The second job is the one people forget.

Rankings get you onto the page of results. The title gets you the click. A page ranking fourth with a title people want to click can pull more traffic than the page above it. Click-through is the one part of search you fully control without writing a single new page.

Keep titles under about 60 characters so they do not get cut off, and put the important words first. Not because of some algorithm trick, but because people scan from the left and stop early.

Write the title for the person searching

Compare these two titles for the same plumber's page:

  • "Services | Dunn Plumbing Ltd."
  • "Drain cleaning in Moncton, same-day service"

The first describes the website's menu structure. The second describes what the searcher typed and what they get. It is not clever copywriting, it is just answering the question in the headline.

A workable formula: what the page offers, plus the one detail that makes someone choose you (location, speed, price range, specialty). Company name at the end, if there is room. Your name matters on your homepage title; on every other page it is spending your best characters on the least useful words.

Descriptions are ad copy, not rankings

Meta descriptions are not a ranking factor, and Google rewrites them about half the time anyway. Write them anyway.

When your description does get shown, it is the two lines of ad copy under your blue link, and it is free. Treat it like an ad: one sentence on what the page delivers, one concrete reason to pick you. 120 to 155 characters. No keyword lists, no "Welcome to our website."

A decent description will not move you up the rankings. It will get you more of the clicks your current ranking already earns, which is the same traffic for a lot less work.

The duplicates problem

Here is what we actually find when we look at sites on our hosting: a homepage titled "Home", and every other page titled "Business Name | Welcome" or some identical variation. WordPress themes and page builders generate this pattern by default, and nobody ever changes it.

Duplicate titles hurt twice. Google struggles to tell your pages apart, so it picks one and half-ignores the rest. And searchers see a title that says nothing, so they click someone else.

Every page that matters should have a title no other page on your site shares.

The 20-minute audit

No tools to buy. Here is the whole procedure:

  1. Search Google for site:yourdomain.com and skim the results. You are seeing your titles and descriptions the way searchers do. Screenshot anything embarrassing.
  2. List your five to ten most important pages: homepage, services, top products, contact.
  3. For each one, rewrite the title as the answer to what someone would type to find that page. Check it reads under 60 characters.
  4. Write a one-sentence description that would make you click it against your competitors' listings.
  5. Enter them with your SEO plugin (Yoast and its peers all have the same two fields per page) and save.

That is it. Do the important pages today and the stragglers whenever. Changes typically show up in results within days to a couple of weeks as Google recrawls.

It is unglamorous work, which is exactly why your competitors have not done it.

If your site is hosted with us and you get stuck finding where your theme or plugin sets titles, send our support team a note and we will point you at the right screen.
