Set up your email on iPhone or Android

Add your domain email to an iPhone or Android phone using IMAP, with the exact server settings pulled straight from cPanel.

This guide gets an email address you created in cPanel working in the mail app on your phone. Before you start, you need the email address and its password, and access to cPanel so you can look up the server settings.

IMAP or POP?

Your phone will ask. Choose IMAP. IMAP keeps mail on the server and syncs it, so your phone, laptop, and webmail all see the same inbox; POP downloads messages to one device and (by default) removes them from the server, which made sense on dial-up and rarely does now. The only common reason to pick POP is a tiny mailbox quota you don't want to fill.

Find your server settings in cPanel

You don't have to guess the settings, cPanel prints them for you.

  1. Log in to cPanel and open Email Accounts.
  2. Click Connect Devices next to the address you're setting up.
  3. Look at the Mail Client Manual Settings section. Note the incoming (IMAP) server, the outgoing (SMTP) server, and the username, which is your full email address.

The secure ports are the ones you want: 993 for incoming IMAP over SSL, and 465 for outgoing SMTP over SSL. Ignore the "non-SSL" settings; there's no good reason to send your password unencrypted.

Add the account on iPhone

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, then Mail (on older versions, Settings then Mail), then Accounts and Add Account.
  2. Choose Other, then Add Mail Account.
  3. Enter your name, full email address, and password, then tap Next.
  4. Make sure IMAP is selected at the top.
  5. Under both Incoming and Outgoing, enter the server name from Connect Devices, and use your full email address as the username for both. Yes, the outgoing server needs the password too.
  6. Tap Next and let it verify, then Save.

Add the account on Android

Android mail apps vary, but the flow is similar in Gmail, Samsung Mail, and most others.

  1. Open the mail app's settings and choose Add account, then Other (not Google or Exchange).
  2. Enter the full email address, choose Personal (IMAP) if asked, then enter the password.
  3. For the incoming server, use the IMAP server name from Connect Devices, port 993, security SSL/TLS, username set to the full address.
  4. For the outgoing server, use the SMTP server name, port 465, SSL/TLS, and turn on "require sign-in" with the same username and password.
  5. Finish and send yourself a test message.

If it didn't work

  • "Cannot verify server identity" or certificate warnings. You're likely using the wrong server name. Use exactly what Connect Devices shows rather than guessing something like mail.yourdomain.com.
  • Incoming works but sending fails. The outgoing server almost always needs authentication turned on, with the full email address as the username. Check that first, and confirm port 465 with SSL.
  • Wrong password errors on a password you're sure of. Passwords for email accounts are separate from your cPanel password. Reset it under Email Accounts, then Manage, and try again.

If it still won't connect, contact us at /support with the address and the error you're seeing.
